List building strategies #1 ? List builders

Without question this is by far what I believe to be the best, most efficient, and cheapest way to build a personal list. List builders allow you to have access to a shared email list of subscribers and allow you to send offers regularly usually every couple of days. There really is some major advantages to this because starting from day one you can have a list to email your offers too.

Some email list builders are better than others, but the truth is, they are all great to join. The cost is usually very low to join for a year, and the benefits are enormous because they work.

The thing I love about list builders is the ability to test my email copy every couple of days. There is benefit to this, because email is all about testing, testing, testing. Some emails get better open rates than others, but being able to test your subject lines and email body copy regularly is essential to email marketing success.

Just getting a 1% increase in your open to conversion rate can make a big difference in your list building. This is also a very powerful and underused strategy by most internet marketers today. I literally once watched a woman do joint ventures and build an email list of over 50,000 subscribers in less than 2 months. She worked her butt off, and had some great valuable stuff to offer her joint venture partners so its not surprising. But, my jaw literally dropped as that was an average of about 833 new subscribers everyday.

The essence of joint ventures is having something of value to offer in return for the ability to send an email blast to someone else?s list. In other words you help each other and leverage each others work to build your own. This can be a very powerful and a great list building strategy but the key is having something to offer the other for access to their list or following.

There are some great list sharing sites on the internet and you can pull some up with Google. But just make sure that if you go down this route that you have something of value to offer in return.

List Building Strategies #3 ? Solo Ads

This is a very powerful strategy that can literally put hundreds if not thousands of subscribers on your list daily. The only draw back to this strategy is that solo ads typically have a cost associated with them and its typically on a per solo ad basis, and if your on a tight budget, this might not be an option.

A great resource to find solo ad opportunities is ?The Directory Of Ezines?. I have personally been a member of this for many years now and have been able to find excellent opportunities for ezines because of it. There is a one time membership cost associated with it but well worth the investment in your business if you plan on looking at solo ads as a lead generation source.

Solo ads typically range from $20 up to $150 and more for a single email blast. Obviously the less expensive ones will have more ads taken out due to the fact that they are cheaper, but some of the more expensive ones tend to weed out people who are just looking to blast non valuable ads to lists. Because of this, the quality and response tends to be better. However, you can still have success with the lesser as well.

I know a gentleman in this industry that does solo ads and usually gets about 2000-4000 subscribers per email solo ad he sends. Of course the lists he buys these ads with are expensive, but the pay off is big because he now has an asset email list that he can build a relationship with and market to regularly.

These three ways to build an email list can really help you come out of the gate running with your internet marketing business. If you take the time to learn and apply some of these strategies, you can have a list in now time at all.

Highway bill becomes House Republican headache

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A bill that Republican leaders were promoting as the centerpiece of their job-creation agenda has instead turned into one of their biggest headaches, thanks largely to tea party conservatives who want to get the federal government out of transportation programs and hand them over to the states.

The House and Senate are heading toward a showdown next week that could result in a cutoff of federal highway and transit aid to states just as the spring construction season starts. The government's authority to spend money from the trust fund that pays for transportation programs, as well as its power to levy the federal gasoline and diesel taxes that feed the fund, expire on March 31. Democrats estimate as many as 1.8 million jobs supported by those programs are at risk.

Neither side wants a shutdown, but House Speaker John Boehner has been unable to recruit enough Republicans to pass the GOP's overhaul of federal highway programs. The biggest group of holdouts are conservatives who want highway programs to be paid for entirely by federal gas and diesel taxes even though that might mean a nearly 40 percent cut in spending because revenue from those taxes has declined.

Boehner's fallback plan is to pass a 90-day extension of current programs in order to give the House more time to line up votes for a comprehensive bill. But Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Thursday he's "not inclined" to go along with an extension. He urged the House to instead take up a $109 billion bill the Senate passed last week by a bipartisan 74-22 vote.

"It's a good bill," Reid said. "But over in a big, dark hole we now refer to as the tea-party-dominated House of Representatives ... they destroyed their own bill, and now they won't agree to take up our bill." House Republicans, he said, "are going to have to feel the heat of the American people."

GOP Rep. Mike Pence, who favors "devolution" of responsibility for transportation to state and local governments, said he's undecided about the five-year, $260 billion GOP bill because he's concerned that it isn't paid for entirely with user fees like fuel taxes and because he doesn't like the way it divvies up highway aid among states.

"I have no doubt the state of Indiana could do a better job for taxpayers and for drivers than the federal government in maintaining our roads in Indiana," said Pence, who is running for governor. "I supported the last highway bill. I think that roads mean jobs. But it's essential that we produce a bill that is both fair and fiscally responsible."

The House bill actually takes a large step toward giving states far more flexibility over how they spend federal aid, said Rep. James Lankford, R-Okla., a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Currently, about 80 percent of state highway programs are paid for with federal aid and 20 percent with state money. Lankford, who is supporting the bill even though he also wants to cede more authority to the states, said he'd eventually like to see that ratio reversed.

Boehner, R-Ohio, blamed his difficulty in passing the bill on the House's ban on "earmarks" ? provisions that used to be tucked into bills that direct spending to lawmakers' pet projects.

"When it comes to things like the (last long-term) highway bill, which used to be very bipartisan, you have to understand it was greased to be bipartisan with 6,371 earmarks," Boehner told reporters. "You take the earmarks away, and guess what? All of a sudden people are beginning to look at the real policy behind it."

Boehner wants to use revenue from expanded oil drilling to help make up a shortfall between federal fuel tax revenues and transportation program spending. But the drilling proposal raises only about $4.3 billion over 10 years, while the gap between revenue and spending in his bill is more than $40 billion.

"The problem with the Senate bill is that it doesn't address the issue of rising gas prices and energy," Boehner said. "We believe that if we're going to reauthorize the highway bill, American energy production ought to be a critical part of it."

Several Republican lawmakers said they expect the Senate to go along with the House's 90-day extension despite Reid's hesitation.

U.S. Experiences Yet Another Month of Strong ... - Bankruptcy

The U.S. economy added 227,000 new jobs in February, according to statistics compiled by the Department of Labor, which represents the third consecutive month of positive job growth in the United States.

Still, though, some critics observed that the unemployment rate remained at 8.3 percent, which is viewed by some economists that the economy is not yet fully recovered, according to a report from The New York Times.

But the upswing in employment, and a corresponding decrease in the number of Americans filing for bankruptcy, suggests that the economy may be on the road to recovery.

According to a report from The New York Times, the jobs numbers bode well for American consumers:

• Outpacing expectations. The Department of Labor?s February findings outpaced its predicted employment additions by more than 60,000 new jobs. Sources attribute the new jobs to increased private production, particularly in the manufacturing sector, and a slowdown in the loss of government jobs, which have been cut at a dizzying rate during the last three years.
• Unemployment rate stays steady. Despite the addition of 227, 000 new jobs, the U.S. unemployment rate remained steady at 8.3 percent. Many observers, however, claim that the stubbornness of the unemployment rate is due to more people re-entering the job market as the economy improves. Thus, the steady rate is not necessarily a negative sign for economic growth.
• Racial disparities. Even though new jobs were added, the unemployment rate for black men took a depressing jump to 14.3 percent, up from the previous rate of 12.7 percent. In contrast, the biggest employment gains were experienced by whites, black women, and college graduates.
• Areas of growth. Sources indicate that a broad range of industries experienced growth last month, including manufacturing, finance, professional services such as accounting and lawyering, mining, and service industry sectors like hotels and restaurants. Oddly, though, construction saws its first job losses in a few month, although this was likely attributable to the typical winter lull in new construction.

While the addition of new jobs is a boon for the economy, consumer advocates are still concerned about the rising levels of consumer debt.

And, somewhat ironically, as consumers increasingly find new jobs, they may feel more liberated to make purchases on credit, which could increase overall levels of individual debt.

Nevertheless, the job growth this winter represents a clear indicator of an improving economy, which is good news for all.

Road to radicalization from Toulouse to Kandahar

TOULOUSE, France (Reuters) - For Mohamed Merah, the Frenchman suspected of killing four Jews and three Muslim soldiers in southwestern France, the road to radicalization ran from Toulouse to Kandahar in Afghanistan.

Merah, 24, who was holed up in a suburban Toulouse apartment on Wednesday, besieged by police commandos from the elite RAID unit, claimed affiliation with al Qaeda and said he wanted to avenge Palestinian children, French Interior Minister Claude Gueant said.

The suspect, a French citizen of Algerian origin, had been under surveillance by France's domestic intelligence service for several years after being identified in Afghanistan. But he led a normal life of soccer and night clubbing, according to friends and neighbors who had no idea that he had been in Afghanistan.

Merah had a police record for several minor offences, some involving violence, Gueant told reporters, "but there was no evidence that he was planning such criminal actions."

As police psychologists tried to talk him into surrendering peacefully, Merah gave the same impression of calm determination and self-control as the gunman on a scooter recorded by security cameras at the Ozer Hatorah Jewish school in Toulouse on Monday.

"With the RAID negotiators, he explained a lot about his itinerary," Gueant said.

"His radicalization took place in a Salafist ideological group and seems to have been firmed up by two journeys he made to Afghanistan and Pakistan."

During one of those trips, Merah was arrested in Kandahar and sentenced to three years in prison for planting bombs in the province but escaped in a mass Taliban jail break in 2008, the director of Kandahar prison told Reuters.

Ghulam Faruq said Merah was detained by Afghan security services on December 19, 2007. Afghan intelligence officials passed on his identity to their French counterparts, a security source said.

TRAINED WITH TALIBAN?

The daily Le Monde said Merah had trained with Pakistani Taliban fighters in a border tribal zone before being sent into southwestern Afghanistan to fight against NATO forces supporting the Kabul government.

French troops are part of that NATO operation, which may explain why the first victims of the gunman's killing spree were serving paratroopers killed in Toulouse on March 11 and Montauban on March 15.

French intelligence sources said about 30 French fighters trained by the Taliban were believed to have taken part in attacks on Western forces in Afghanistan.

Gueant said the Salafist group to which Merah belonged had no official name and had never given any indication of turning to criminal activity. Police were still trying to determine whether the gunman acted alone or as part of a group.

Merah's mother, elder brother and two sisters were detained by police on Tuesday and negotiators sought their help in trying to persuade him to turn himself in to the authorities.

"His mother said she did not wish to speak to him because she did not believe she could convince him and he would be deaf to her appeals," Gueant said.

Merah's profile is typical of hundreds of second- or third-generation French immigrants from North Africa who have travelled to Afghanistan or Pakistan over the last two decades attracted by militant Islamist groups, security officials say.

Many were radicalized by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which triggered a wave of attacks on Jewish targets in France in the early 2000s, including arson attacks on synagogues. The number of anti-Semitic attacks declined last year, figures published by the Jewish community showed.

"LOST THE PLOT"

On his return to Toulouse, Merah led a normal life.

Cedric Lambert, 46, father of an upstairs neighbor, said Merah was friendly and had helped them about 10 months ago to carry a heavy sofa upstairs.

"He was extremely normal," Lambert said.

A group of four 24-year-old men of similar ethnic background who said they were friends of Merah tried to go to his apartment block on Wednesday to persuade him to surrender but were stopped at a police roadblock.

All told a Reuters reporter he had never talked to them about religion and they had no idea he had been to Afghanistan.

One friend who gave his name as Kamal, a financial adviser at La Banque Postale, said he had known Merah at school and they had done soccer training together after meeting again two years ago.

"He is someone who is very discreet. He is not someone who would brag and go around and say 'Oh look at my new girlfriend, look how great I am.' He is very polite and always well-behaved," Kamal said.

"He never spoke about Islam but he did pray. But we all pray five times a day. There's nothing strange about that."

Another friend of Moroccan origin, who gave the pseudonym Danny Dem, said Merah had tried to enlist in the French army but had been rejected. He said he had seen Merah in a city centre nightclub just last week.

Merah did not drink "but I don't think he is any more religious than I am. I think he has just lost the plot," Danny Dem said.

A third contemporary, who declined to give his name, said he went to primary school with Merah and they had remained friends.

"He likes football and motor-bikes like any other guy his age," said the man, dressed in a blue French national soccer shirt. "I didn't even know he prayed."

French police say they have arrested 914 suspected Islamist militants since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States and imprisoned 224, averting several planned attacks.

Under pressure from fuel prices, Obama starts energy blitz

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Shiny solar panels, sprawling gas fields and the site of a future oil pipeline will give President Barack Obama a set of convenient photo backdrops this week as he launches a campaign-like tour to tout his energy policies to Americans.

Obama begins a two-day, four-state trip on Wednesday to promote plans to make the United States less dependent on foreign oil just as voters grow increasingly exasperated about rising gasoline prices, a trend that could influence the president's re-election chances.

Republicans cite Obama's rejection of a new pipeline from Canada and support for a now bankrupt solar panel company along with the higher prices as evidence that his energy plans are not working.

Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich have made energy a key component of their pitches to become their party's nominee to take on Obama, a Democrat, on November 6.

So Obama - who boasts an "all of the above" strategy of boosting renewable fuels, increasing domestic oil and gas production and promoting energy efficiency - is visiting areas that illustrate his policies while slamming Republicans for making promises they can't keep.

Obama and his advisers have painted Republicans as solely focused on oil and gas drilling to the detriment of other energy sources, while mocking Gingrich - without naming him - for promising to bring gas prices down to $2.50 a gallon.

"Drilling alone is not an answer," White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Monday.

"With a very small portion of the world's known reserves but a huge demand for oil on the world market, we need to diversify our approach.?And that's an approach that I think a broad majority of the American people would also support."

Analysts said the trip was a good way for Obama to show he had no silver bullet to deal with gasoline prices, a fact the president has emphasized repeatedly.

"Obviously, with the recent spike in gas prices, energy is an issue weighing heavily on the minds of many Americans," said David Konisky, a professor at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute.

"Like any president, there is little that Obama can do in the short-term to bring down prices, which makes it difficult to alleviate public concerns."

Obama will try to address those concerns with a show of force about what his administration is doing to promote renewable energy as well as oil and gas drilling.

At Obama's first stop in Boulder City, Nevada, the president will visit the Copper Mountain Solar 1 Facility, which, with nearly 1 million solar panels, is the largest photovoltaic plant operating in the United States.

His next stop will be outside Carlsbad, New Mexico, to an area with more than 70 active drilling rigs.

On Thursday, the president will tackle critics of his decision to block the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada head on, going to Cushing, Oklahoma, where TransCanada Corp plans to build the southern leg of the project, which Obama supports.

"The president will reiterate his administration's commitment to expediting the construction of a pipeline from Cushing, Oklahoma to the Gulf of Mexico, relieving a bottleneck of oil and bringing domestic resources to market," a White House official said.

He finishes the trip in Ohio -- an critical battleground state in the November election -- at a university that does advanced energy research.

Elise delivering a great performance was all they agreed on Thursday night, when Jimmy decided to make a real live appearance and squash the rumor that he was in reality, a puppet controlled by a backstage?ventriloquist.?OK, so maybe that wasn't a rumor, but had it been suggested last week.? Before he showed himself at a live show, it would have made a few of you pause . . . admit it. ?Besides, just because he was in the audience this week, doesn't necessarily disprove anything. ?He was still seated the entire time . . . have you ever seen a?ventriloquist's dummy stand up? ?Something to think about.

In addition to an appearance by Jimmy, a "filler" performance by Demi Lovado (whose song was far too reminiscent of something Taylor Swift would sing to avoid the fast forward button) and, much to Colton Dixon's delight, a song by Daughtry. There was also a special appearance by none other than Tommy Hilfiger, who has signed on to become the contestants' image consultant beginning next week.

Unfortunately, for one contestant, there would be no Hilfiger makeovers or summer tours. ?After sending Elise to safety, Ryan announced that Shannon Magrane and Erika Van Pelt were the bottom two this week. ?Though Jimmy stated that Erika was a victim of?over singing, it was clear that there were at least two other boys who deserved to be joining Shannon in the bottom two more than Erika: ?Heejun Han (though it hurts to say it - especially when he and Phillip Phillips have such a touching bromance blooming) and Deandre Brackensick.

Yet the five boys sat in the safety of their Top 10 seats as Shannon and Erika awaited their fate. ?As it turned out, the person who would have benefitted most from a designer consultant, Shannon, was announced as the contestant with the lowest number of votes. ?The judges rightfully opted not to save Shannon after a pitchy and strained encore of "One Sweet Day."

So another girl bites the dust. ?Keeping with the theme of male domination, did anyone happen to catch the Acuvue contact lens?commercial? ?The commercial features three young adolescents who are making empowering statements about how their lives will improve (seemingly after they get contact lenses.) ?A young male athlete states that one day, kids will want to wear his soccer jersey. ?A young male fast food worker insists that someday he'll be the one giving the orders, rather than receiving them. ?And then it's the young girl's turn to share her aspirations for her future.

"Someday," she claims as she sits alone in a party dress, indicating toward a cute boy, "he'll be begging me to dance."

That's right girls, the sky is the limit . . . but better to aim a bit lower. ?We wouldn't want you to knock yourself out on that glass ceiling.

But stepping down from the soap box, it is time to review last night's?predictions. (and trust me, I'd much rather stay on the soapbox than face the music on this front). ?We've already?established?that the theory about no one actually going home was way off base. ?Did the bottom three?predictions?hold up any better this evening?

Not quite. ?Of the three foretold: ?Deandre, Heejun and Elise, only one (Elise) came to pass. ?

It may seem as though all credibility has been lost, but just wait. ?When news breaks that Jimmy's father's name is really Geppetto, you'll all come crawling back . . .

Early Spring Drives Butterfly Population Declines

Early snowmelt caused by climate change in the Colorado Rocky Mountains snowballs into two chains of events: a decrease in the number of flowers, which, in turn, decreases available nectar. The result is decline in a population of the Mormon Fritillary butterfly, Speyeria mormonia.

Using long-term data on date of snowmelt, butterfly population sizes and flower numbers at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, Carol Boggs, a biologistat Stanford University, and colleagues uncovered multiple effects of early snowmelt on the growth rate of an insect population.

"Predicting effects of climate change on organisms' population sizes will be difficult in some cases due to lack of knowledge of the species' biology," said Boggs, lead author of a paper reporting the results online in this week's journal Ecology Letters.

Taking into account the butterfly's life cycle and the factors determining egg production was important to the research.

Butterflies lay eggs (then die) in their first summer; the caterpillars from those eggs over-winter without eating and develop into adults in the second summer.

In laboratory experiments, the amount of nectar a female butterfly ate determined the number of eggs she laid. This suggested that flower availability might be important to changes in population size.

Early snowmelt in the first year leads to lower availability of the butterfly's preferred flower species, a result of newly developing plants being exposed to early-season frosts that kill flower buds.

The ecologists showed that reduced flower--and therefore nectar--availability per butterfly adversely affected butterfly population growth rate.

Early snowmelt in the second year of the butterfly life cycle worsened the effect, probably through direct killing of caterpillars during early-season frosts.

The combined effects of snowmelt in the two consecutive years explained more than four-fifths of the variation in population growth rate.

"Because species in natural communities are interconnected, the effects of climate change on any single species can easily be underestimated," said Saran Twombly, program director in the National Science Foundation's Division of Environmental Biology, which funded the research.

"This study combines long-term, data models, and an understanding of species interactions to underscore the complex effects climate change has on natural populations."

"It's very unusual for research to uncover a simple mechanism that can explain almost all the variation in growth rate of an insect population," said David Inouye, a biologist at the University of Maryland and co-author of the paper.

Indeed, "one climate parameter can have multiple effects on an organism's population growth," Boggs said. "This was previously not recognized for species such as butterflies that live for only one year.

"We can already predict that this coming summer will be a difficult one for the butterflies," she said, "because the very low snowpack in the mountains this winter makes it likely that there will be significant frost damage."

"Long-term studies such as ours are important to understanding the 'ecology of place,' and the effects of weather and possible climate change on population numbers," said Inouye.

"This research is critical to assessing the broader effects of weather on an ever-changing Earth," he said. "By facilitating long-term studies, field stations such as the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory are an invaluable asset."

Stanford University's Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education also funded the work.

The wait is over for homeowners who want to refinance but owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth. Starting next week, borrowers should find a wide range of lenders offering refinances through HARP 2.0, a program that allows borrowers to refinance regardless of how deeply underwater they are.

In places that were hit hardest by the housing downturn, homeowners have been waiting to refinance under HARP 2.0 for months, as it is their only chance to refinance at a lower rate.

?It is going to be a very big deal for places like Florida,? says Rob Nunziata, president of FBC Mortgage, based?in Orlando, Fla. ?It will help a lot of responsible borrowers.?

HARP 2.0, a revamped version of the Home Affordable Refinance Program, was announced five months ago. Until now, only a limited number of borrowers had access to it. Although a few national lenders started to offer HARP 2.0 refinances to their own customers earlier this year, most lenders had to wait for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to update their automated underwriting systems with the program?s new rules. All updates should be completed by March 17.

As of Monday, borrowers should have plenty of options when shopping for a HARP 2.0 refinance.

?If you are turned down for HARP 2.0, it makes sense to talk to a different lender,? says Dan Green, a loan officer at Waterstone Mortgage in Cincinnati.

Who?s eligible?

To qualify for a HARP 2.0 refinance, you must meet these requirements.

• Your mortgage must have been sold to Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac before June 1, 2009.
• You must be current on the mortgage and have no late payments in the last six months. A late payment is defined as one that?s more than 30 days overdue.
• You must not have more than one late payment in the past 12 months.
• This must be your first refinance through HARP. If you have refinanced under an earlier version of HARP, then you do not qualify.

HARP 2.0 might succeed

Borrowers have grown frustrated as they hear announcements of numerous mortgage relief programs that do little to help them. But HARP 2.0 has the potential to succeed. Many of the obstacles borrowers faced in earlier versions of HARP were removed. The program is expected to help thousands of underwater borrowers lower their monthly house payments, mortgage experts say.

The previous version of the program did not allow refinances for borrowers who owed more than 125 percent of what their homes were worth. That requirement stood as a major obstacle to thousands of borrowers whose homes plunged in value. HARP 2.0 removes that cap.

HARP 2.0 releases the lender?s liability on the original loan. In short, that?s a key incentive to get lenders to embrace the program.

With the previous version of HARP, many homeowners complained that lenders wouldn?t refinance more than 105 percent of a home?s value, even though the program?s cap was 125 percent. Some feared lenders would adopt a similar policy for HARP 2.0. But three of the largest lenders ? Bank of America, Chase and Wells Fargo ? say they have removed the cap and are willing to refinance according to the HARP 2.0 new guidelines.

Overlays

Lenders may add their own internal requirements, called ?overlays,? to the HARP 2.0 guidelines, Nunziata says. Although there is no minimum credit score to qualify for HARP 2.0, some lenders will require a minimum of 620, he says. Such a requirement is an overlay.

Lenders are required to verify income, employment and credit history under HARP 2.0. But it appears that many lenders will offer HARP 2.0 refis with limited overlays, especially on primary homes, Nunziata says.

?We?ll have no overlays,? says Ted Iturriria, vice president of loan production at AimLoan.com in San Diego.

Increased demand means potential delays

Bank of America, Wells and Chase say they have had a large volume of applications from borrowers for the HARP 2.0 program since they made it available to their existing customers.

Having been inundated with inquiries from borrowers, smaller lenders and brokers across the country have gathered applications and documents so they can process the refinances as soon as the system becomes available to them this weekend.

As lenders become overwhelmed with the volume of applications, borrowers should be prepared for delays, Green says. ?Talk to your loan officer and get their feel for what?s an appropriate length of time? for closing, he says. Lock your rate accordingly.

Second mortgages not as big of an obstacle

If you have a second mortgage, you?re more likely to encounter delays. That?s because the second mortgage lender has to sign off on the refinance, agreeing to subordinate the loan to the lender who refinances the first mortgage.

But the good news is, lenders will be more willing to sign off on HARP 2.0 refinances than they were with the previous version of HARP, industry experts say.

?If you have to subordinate, you?ll have some delays, maybe 30 to 45 days, but I don?t think it will hold anybody back,? says Brett Sinnott, director of secondary marketing at CMG Mortgage in San Ramon, Calif.
