Volkswagen tops the 10 best car ads of 2011

By Dan Carney, msnbc.com contributor

Yes, I know, this sounds like a roster of the best sushi-flavored ice creams.? The vast majority of car industry commercials are tripe, either falling in the category of my-truck-is-tougher-than-yours urination contests or bash-your-head-against-the-wall Sale-A-Brations trying to move metal for dubious ?holidays? like Christmas in July.? Others try too hard, inflicting dancing hamsters on us.

But occasionally lightning strikes and we get genius.? We?ve seen it before as with this 1996 Nissan commercial, Toys.

Not everything in this year?s top ten list reaches that level, but a few of them definitely equal the spark of Toys.

10.? Cadillac, "Pioneered by Cadillac and Used by Ferrari"

We all know that Cadillac makes cushy highway barges, right?? And Ferrari is the world?s preeminent sports car builder.? Got it?? Absolutely nothing in common. But Cadillac needs to remake its image for a new generation, and it is building the slinky CTS-V Coupe to get their attention.? Turns out some Cadillac know-how also got Ferrari?s attention, as the Prancing Horse has adopted electromagnetic adjustable shock absorbers first seen on the Plodding Hearse.? Definitely makes you scratch your head.? But don?t think of taking grandma?s ?98 Deville to the track.

9.? Audi, "Luxury Prison"

When your product is not the industry standard, you make a living by knocking the king off his throne.? Audi is gaining U.S. market share hand over fist at the expense of incumbents like Mercedes-Benz and Lexus by directly targeting them in ads that make them look fusty, dull or, worst of all, common.

The Luxury Prison commercial was produced for the Super Bowl, and it paints Mercedes-Benz drivers as moldy old followers, bound to choose their car because ?my father had one.?? Meanwhile the younger, hipper protagonist escapes Luxury Prison in his trendy new Audi A8.

Best of all, the stuffy traditionalists rioting in Luxury Prison are pacified by the dulcet notes of noted jazz saxophonist Kenny G, who demonstrates an unexpected sense of humor by participating in this commercial and the lengthy internet teaser which preceded it.

?

Honorable mention to another Audi commercial featuring former NBA basketball coach Phil Jackson.

?

8.? Chevrolet, "Corvette ZR1 Racing Porsche, Ferrari and BMW" ?????????

When car companies go racing, they have to soup up their production models to levels unimaginable to the assembly line workers bolting the cars together.? Unless the race car in question is a supercharged 638 horsepower, 205-mile per hour Corvette ZR1, in which case the racing rulesmakers insist they rein it in.

As Chevrolet fights its way back from General Motors? bankruptcy, it needs spots to convince people that it can compete with the world?s best car brands and win.? On the racetrack it can do that with one arm, and about 168 horsepower, tied behind its back, which sounds like a good start.

The flag-waving Still Building Rockets spot is another good one, reminding us that American ingenuity is alive and well.

?

7.? Porsche, "Engineered for Magic"

Porsche, in contrast to Chevrolet, has established its performance bona fides, but seeks to convince shoppers that its cars aren?t limited to the racetrack.? The "Engineered for Magic" spot shows the company?s famous sports cars serving in prosaic chores like driving in snow, hauling concrete from the hardware store and picking up kids from school.? Like the Cadillac commercial, it works for Porsche because it plays against type, and who doesn?t like the idea of rationalizing the purchase of a news sports car because it is practical?? You just better hope those kids don?t grow if you want to keep putting them in the back seat.

?

6. Fiat, "Seduction"

Fiat plays to type with this commercial for the Abarth high-performance model of the 500 minicar.? Italian performance is sexy, sultry and even seductive.? Our everyman hero is bopping along, minding his own business when he is ensnared by irresistible Italian sex appeal, which turns out to be generated by a car.? The spot is also helpful for Fiat in its attempt to reenter the U.S. market because the 500 has been struggling with an apparent ?girl car? label, and the sporty Abarth and car-as-a-girl portrayal should shore up interest among male buyers.? It is certainly more powerful than the pointless Jennifer Lopez commercials for the 500, which seem more like an attempt to kickstart her career than to tout the fun little Italian runabout.

4 (tie).? Chevrolet, "Volt Gas Station 1 and 2"

The next two commercials involve a bit of corporate sniping at one another, so to avoid being caught in their crossfire or accused of favoritism, we?ll call it a tie between Nissan?s battery-electric Leaf, which uses no gas and and Chevy?s extended-range battery electric Volt, which can use some gas.? In alphabetical order, the Chevy is listed first.

Because the idea of a gas-powered electric car is confusing to most consumers, Chevy tries to explain it by having a kid pester a Volt driver who has stopped at a gas station to answer nature?s call, not OPEC?s.? See, this electric car can use gas, but only if your need too, after running low on electrons, so that, well, watch the spot?s explanation.

?

4 (tie).? Nissan, "Gas Powered Everything"

There is a disturbing dystopian edge to this commercial, but it certainly grabs your attention.? In an effort to shoot down the idea that the Volt?s ability to burn gas is an advantage, "Gas Powered Everything" imagines a world in which, well, everything, is gas powered.

From the tiny screaming two-stroke-powered iPods to the industrial chug of the tractor motor in the copier, this world is grease-smeared and polluted, illustrating the expected benefits of shiny, happy electric power.

The pump of the gas pedal and twist of the key is familiar to anyone who has ever driven a gas-powered car, especially one old enough to have a carburetor.? The exposed valvetrain of the antique engine powering the coffee maker lends a real steampunk aesthetic for appreciative gearheads.? Calling it ?darkly memorable,? AdWeek magazine named it the ninth-best commercial of 2011.

3. Volkswagen, "Vamanos"

It is like a set-up for a Johnny Carson joke on the pre-Leno Tonight Show.? ?My Passat TDI can go so far on a tank of gas.?? ?How far can it go?? It turns out, according to this commercial, that after 13 hours and nearly 800 miles in the saddle listening to a Learn to Speak Spanish CD, two white-bread buddies on a road trip can emerge from the Passat at a gas station arguing in Spanish.? That?s how far it can go on a tank of gas.? Er, diesel.

2. Chrysler, "Born of Fire"

But for Volkswagen?s tour de force, Chrysler?s ?Born of Fire? paean to the motor city featuring the real Slim Shady/Eminem/Marshall Mathers and the Selected of God gospel choir would have stolen the show in the Super Bowl commercial sweepstakes.? As it is, it dominated the ?Best Drama? category, illustrating the real people who still live in Detroit and who remain dedicated to the city?s success even while coastal elites have long since written off Motown, its residents and their products. ?Edmunds.com says that search traffic for Chrysler jumped 328 percent after the spot and AdWeek named it the third-best commercial of 2011.?

The Chrysler-sponsored Selected of God video of their version of Eminem?s ?Lose Yourself? is even more musically compelling.???????????

1. Volkswagen, "The Force"

Sometimes a baseball slugger hits a pitch so perfectly that he knows from the feel of the bat, before the ball has even gone anywhere, that he has just crushed a home run to the upper deck.? That?s how VW?s ad agency must have felt when they finished ?The Force.? ?The Super Bowl commercial for the Passat family sedan features a deluded kid in a Darth Vader costume who is desperate to bend objects in his world to his significant will.? After an unsuccessful day, the kid is dumbstruck by his abrupt success bewitching his dad?s car, courtesy of the remote start function on the car?s key fob.? John Williams? ?Imperial March? score has never been more powerful.?? It has more than 46 million viewings on YouTube, and a ?making of? video with outtakes has another four million.? Plus that whole Super Bowl thing.? AdWeek named this their top commercial of the year, saying ?Few ads in history have been as charming, as clever, as perfectly paced or as well loved as this.?

Gene Mutation May Be Key to Familial Pancreatic Cancer (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 29 (HealthDay News) -- Individuals may face a higher hereditary risk for developing pancreatic cancer if they carry abnormalities in the so-called "ATM" gene, new research reveals.

The finding, reported in an upcoming issue of Cancer Discovery, stems from genetic-sequencing work conducted among 166 pancreatic cancer patients. For comparative purposes, 190 other individuals who did not have pancreatic cancer also underwent sequencing.

The study was led by Alison Klein, an associate professor of oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins and director of the National Familial Pancreas Tumor Registry.

Noting that 10 percent of pancreatic cancer patients are from families in which more than one member has battled the disease, Klein pointed out in a news release from the American Association for Cancer Research that "there was significant reason to believe this clustering was due to genetics."

But she added that no previous effort had "been able to find the causative genes that explained the cluster of pancreatic cancer for a majority of these families."

Among the pancreatic cancer patients examined, four were found to have the ATM gene mutation. By contrast, none of the healthy individuals who were sequenced carried the abnormality, according to the report.

Ultimately, the finding could lead to the development of a new screening option for a disease that kills 95 percent of patients within five years of diagnosis, according to the release. Though endoscopy is under study as another possible screening tool, there are as yet no other recommended screening alternatives for the number four cause of cancer-related death.

iTriage to Integrate Microsoft HealthVault Data with Its Mobile Apps

Healthcare software maker iTriage has announced that it plans to integrate Microsoft's HealthVault personal healthcare record (PHR) with its iPhone and Android apps next year enabling users to access their health records stored on Microsoft's service straight from their mobile devices.

"PHRs offer consumers a great way to monitor their health. Our iTriage vision includes being the mobile aggregator for multiple PHRs in the future," said Peter Hudson, MD and co-founder of iTriage.

"We believe today's HealthVault PHR integration into iTriage will give consumers a convenient and easy way to access their health information anywhere, anytime." he added.

The iTriage app allows users to access information on symptoms, medical conditions, medication and procedures straight from their mobile phones and even gives them suggestions regarding where they can get their medical condition treated.

The app has been used by more than 3 million people and is available from the iTunes App Store and Android Market as a free download.

iTriage, through the press release, indirectly asked Google Health users to migrate to Microsoft HealthVault.

Google To Make Media Tablet, Says Eric Schmidt (NewsFactor)

Google intends to make a media tablet "of the highest quality" within the next six months to compete with Apple's iPad, said Google Chairman Eric Schmidt in an interview with an Italian newspaper.

As the "the Michelangelo of our era," Schmidt said, Steve Jobs understood the revolutionary potential of the tablet and created an amazing product like the iPad. However, it is the nature of capitalism for companies to compete, Schmidt said.

"In the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality," Schmidt told Corriere della Sera, a daily newspaper in Milan.

Schmidt also said that Google was up to the task of competing with Apple's new Siri voice-assistant software for the iPhone.

"We have had the best voice translation software for a long time already, [and] we can always use it to do things similar to Siri," said Schmidt, according to the newspaper. "Of course, I am not speaking about future products not yet announced. However, we have the technology -- we need not develop it."

    Aiding Software Developers

Any time the quality of devices helps to improve an expansion in the user base, it is a boon for developers, noted Al Hilwa, director of applications software development at IDC.

"The tussle between the platforms is an overall plus for developers," Hilwa said. "The platform owners are pressured competitively to take aggressive control of the ecosystem and improve it through better tools, app stores and developer outreach and evangelism."

Schmidt's remarks suggest that Google intends to roll out the media tablet equivalent of the original Nexus-branded Android smartphone for developers. If correct, the goal would be to encourage app developers to create a wider range of software products for tablets running Android 4.0 from vendors such as Samsung, HTC and Motorola.

Though the new Kindle Fire runs Android beneath its customer interface, Amazon only provides its tablet users with limited access to Android Market. Still, the low cost of Amazon's red-hot device -- which sells for less than it costs to build -- has set a new bar for pricing that other Android tablet makers can't match.

    Apple's Counter Strategy

Amazon's robust tablet sales this holiday season makes it even more important for Android tablet rivals such as Samsung, Motorola and HTC to be able to offer a wider array of apps specifically tailored for Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich. IHS predicts that Amazon will capture second place in the global smartphone market in the current quarter by selling 3.9 million Kindle Fire units.

"Most other Android tablet makers must earn a profit based on hardware sales alone," said Rhoda Alexander, senior manager, tablet and monitor research for IHS. "In contrast, Amazon plans to use the Kindle Fire to drive sales of physical goods that comprise the majority of the company's business."

On the other hand, the extent to which Amazon will be able to outpace growth in the media tablet market next year will depend in part on whatever counter-strategy that Apple elects to adopt. For example, if the rumored iPad 3 is ready to roll in the first quarter of 2012, Apple may decide to lower the price of its older iPad and iPad 2 models -- just as it did on the smartphone front when it launched the iPhone 4S last October.

"I find it interesting that Google has kept its focus on Apple," Hilwa said. "They likely fear a lower-end Apple device that might push against Android harder."

Christmas Reassessment : Pittsburgh Legal Back Talk

Posted By Cliff Tuttle | December 18, 2011

    No. 774

The County Assessors really do have a heart. ?They tried to keep from delivering the first batch of reassessment notices ?before Christmas. ?But Judge Wettick would have none of it.

I must admit, I didn?t initially give Rich Fitzgerald credit for shrewd thinking. ?It was puzzling that the County Council rushed to pass a one mill tax increase almost immediately after the election. ?But, upon reflection, the answer is simple. ?They can?t pass more than a nominal tax increase in a reassessment year. Moreover, once the numbers start to trickle out, there won?t be any political cover for tax increases.

    Smart.

Snoop, Khalifa look to be next Cheech and Chong (AP)

ATLANTA ? Snoop Dogg remembered watching all of the Cheech and Chong movies growing up, idolizing the pothead tandem's ability to always escape from danger in their comedy films.

Wiz Khalifa revered Snoop Dogg for his weed-smoking, ultra-smooth West Coast swagger shown extensively throughout his rap career.

One is the mentor, the other is the protege. Since the two rappers met for the first time last year, they've built a strong rapport with each other and have united to create their own album, "Mac & Devin Go to High School," which was released this week.

The album is the soundtrack of the rappers' upcoming stoner comedy, "Mac & Devin Go to High School," which is expected to be released early next year. The duo feels they are capable of following the footsteps of Cheech and Chong, who gained fame through their marijuana humor.

"They smoked joints, they were funny, they were cool and they would get into real situations," Snoop Dogg said. "To me, that's what me and Wiz represent. A lot of kids growing up don't understand who Cheech and Chong are. So we're the modern-day image of them. We're bringing it back."

Snoop Dogg and Khalifa have embodied the fun-filled, carefree life, with a devotion to smoking marijuana. Their easygoing demeanor is displayed on the duo's single, "Young, Wild & Free," featuring Bruno Mars, which peaked at No. 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

The rappers are latest popular hip-hop characters to create an album and movie revolved around their pothead excursions. Rapper Redman and Method Man appeared in the 2001 film, "How High."

But Khalifa said he and Snoop Dogg are ""trying to create our own lane.

"There have been others to pave the way for us, so we're just trying to keep it going, and tell our own stories," added Khalifa, who finished a six-city tour with Snoop Dogg this week.

Some believe the rappers are having too much fun with their storytelling. In May, there were reports that school officials canceled the filming of "High School" at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, Calif., after learning the theme of the movie was centered around marijuana, which is an illegal substance.

When contacted by The Associated Press, school officials declined to comment.

But Snoop Dogg and Khalifa ? who both stand at a lanky 6-foot-4 ? coolly denied there were any problems.

"We heard about it, but it didn't mean much to us," Snoop Dogg said. "We got done what we needed to get done. It was shot and promptly prepared."

Snoop Dogg, 40, took a liking to the 24-year-old Khalifa after he noticed his kids' infatuation with the Pittsburgh-bred rapper's ubiquitous 2010 hit "Black and Yellow." From there, Snoop Dogg invited Khalifa to his home in Los Angeles.

"We have built a bond and a friendship that's going to last a lifetime," Khalifa said. "People will hear it in the music, and see it in the movie."

After a conversation that lasted a few hours, the two rappers decided that same day to collaborate for an album and movie. They didn't waste time, filming the movie and recording the album within a two-month timeframe.

In "High School," Khalifa stars as a senior valedictorian named Devin who is only focused on his academics. He breaks out of his shell after meeting Snoop Dogg's character, Mac, a teenage student (yes, he is playing a teen) who has street smarts but struggles to apply them in the classroom.

Snoop Dogg described his partnership with Khalifa as "a magical situation."

"I've been around magic a lot of times from being with Dr. Dre, Tupac, Master P. and Nate Dogg. What me and Wiz had was a magical moment right there."

Adobe releases final mobile Flash update, includes Ice Cream Sandwich support (Digital Trends)

    android4.0

Announced in an official blog post earlier today, Adobe pushed out?Flash Player version 11.1 for Android devices. The new software supports version 4.0 of the Android operating system otherwise known as Ice Cream Sandwich. The update for Flash Player is?available?on the Android Market and owners of the brand new Samsung?Galaxy Nexus can download the update immediately. Adobe also announced the upcoming release of?Adobe AIR 3.1, software that helps bring applications utilizing Flash to a variety of platforms. Using Adobe AIR 3.1, developers can bring apps to the Amazon Kindle Fire, Barnes and Noble Nook and BlackBerry PlayBook as well as Apple and Android platforms.

Adobe will continue to push out?bug fixes and security updates for the mobile version of Flash Player, but will no longer continue development of the product in regards to new features. Adobe officials claim to be shifting to HTML5 development and will seek ways to integrate Flash into HTML5 applications and Web development products. In regards to desktop PCs and laptops,?Flash Player 12 is currently under development and the company is looking for ways to integrate Flash into HTML5 sites.

Microsoft recently announced that the?Metro-style version of Windows 8 will no longer support plugins within Internet Explorer 10. This means that consumers won?t be able to install Adobe Flash on the metro version, possibly a contributing factor to Adobe?s decision to focus on HTML5 development. However, Windows 8 owners that utilize the traditional desktop style will be able to install Adobe Flash and view Flash animations within Internet Explorer 10. While no release date has been announced for the new version of Windows, Microsoft plans to show off the new operating system at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show during January 2012 as well as release the public beta of the software during?February 2012.

Putin's challenger vows to pardon Khodorkovsky (AP)

MOSCOW ? The Russian billionaire who plans to challenge Vladimir Putin in Russia's presidential election said Thursday that his first move if elected will be to pardon jailed tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

Mikhail Prokhorov said he would also allow free registration of opposition parties and restore popular elections of provincial governors if he wins March's vote. Putin has marginalized opposition forces, tightened election rules and abolished direct elections of governors.

The 46-year-old Prokhorov, estimated to be worth $18 billion, made his fortune in metals, banking and media. He also owns 80 percent in the New Jersey Nets. Khodorkovsky, once Russia's richest man, has been in jail since 2003 on tax evasion and fraud charges seen as a punishment for defying Putin's power.

Khodorkovsky's lawyers have lost numerous appeals to clear him of the charges.

Prokhorov's surprise announcement this week that he would seek the presidency came in the wake of nationwide protests over alleged fraud in national parliament elections. The protests, which included a throng of tens of thousands in Moscow, were an unprecedented public display of widespread discontent with the man who has dominated Russian politics for a dozen years as president and later as prime minister.

Putin stepped down as president in 2008 because of term limits, but seeks to return to the Kremlin in the March 4 election.

Speaking at a meeting with supporters at a meeting to nominate him for the race, Prokhorov hailed last weekend's protest in Moscow against vote fraud, which attracted tens of thousands in the largest show of discontent in 20 years.

"I deeply understand the demands and the strivings of the people who took to the streets," Prokhorov told reporters, adding that he may join a follow-up protest later this month.

Prokhorov said that "expert opinion" has prompted him to believe that the Dec. 4 parliamentary election was unfair and rigged. But he argued for a legal response to the fraud allegations.

The tycoon avoided criticizing Putin directly, but said he wasn't afraid to challenge his power: "Putin is a serious rival, but I'm not afraid of competition."

Prokhorov, noted for his playboy lifestyle, also humorously noted that he might need to settle down and find a potential first lady.

"I'm ready even for this ? if that's necessary for my country and for winning the presidential election."

Prokhorov's presidential bid follows his botched performance before the parliamentary election when he formed a liberal political party with the Kremlin's tacit support but abandoned it under what he called Kremlin pressure.

Some observers alleged that Prokhorov may have made amends with the Kremlin and might be running for president to accommodate voters unhappy with the authorities to steal the thunder from the opposition.

Prokhorov said in his blog Wednesday that he would play his own game.

"Naturally, my candidacy is good for the Kremlin. Naturally, they want to play democracy and show that people have 'some kind of a choice'," he wrote.

"But we must absolutely use the authorities, too, if we don't want to just make some noise and disappear, but to change our lives for the better."

Long time RPer, first time poster.

    Oh wow. Here I am.

The name's Jen. I'll be 22 in about a week.
I've been role playing since the late 90s, early millennium and have been an avid reader/writer since I could, well, read and write. I haven't RPed in a very long time, but I miss it. Especially in the winter where I am most creative. All of my RPing buddies have dropped off the face of the earth or grown up and fled the coop. Good for them, but I'm suffering without the sport of characters and imagination.

My main inspirations are Stephen King and horror movies, and I tend to write in this style the majority of the time.
I love anything with a twist and a dark story, so it's no surprise that the majority of my characters are naughty or at least dysfunctional. I almost can't even help it! I play mostly females but been shifting towards males, and I can comfortably play both.

This place is overwhelming! I don't know what to do with so many people like me!

    My role playing preferences:

      - Realism or fantasy [usually semi-fantasy, majority realism]

Romney snags endorsement from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (Daily Caller)

Mitt Romney picked up a major South Carolina endorsement on Friday from the state?s governor, Nikki Haley.

?The election next November will have ramifications for generations,? Haley said. ?Neither South Carolina nor the nation can afford four more years of President Obama, and Mitt Romney is the right person to take him on and get America back on track.?

Haley, who will serve as co-chairman of the Romney campaign?s national steering committee, announced her endorsement on ?Fox and Friends? this morning. On Friday, Romney will campaign with her in Greenville. They?ll also appear together at events Saturday in Charleston and Myrtle Beach.

Haley, viewed as a rising star in the Republican party, was elected to the gubernatorial seat in the Palmetto State in 2010. Her rise was aided with help from an endorsement by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who listed her as one of her ?mama grizzlies.?

?It is an honor to have the endorsement of Governor Haley,? said Mitt Romney. ?As a successful businesswoman who entered public service so government could better serve the people, Governor Haley?s career-long efforts to reform government, make government more accountable to the taxpayers, and fight wasteful spending should be examples for leaders across the country.?

Europe debt woes prompt year-end flight from risk (Reuters)

SINGAPORE (Reuters) ? Asian shares fell into bear market territory for the year and commodities and the euro nursed stinging losses on Thursday, after fears that Europe's debt crisis is still worsening prompted investors to dump riskier assets and huddle in the safety of the dollar and Treasuries.

The gloomy mood was not improved by a private sector survey indicating China's factory output shrinking again in December, adding to the headwinds facing a global economy struggling with sluggish U.S. growth and the euro zone sliding back into recession.

"We're quite bearish about the world at the moment," said Damien Boey, equity strategist at Credit Suisse in Sydney. "You're looking at basically the three major economies in the world causing problems."

The market view that a European Union summit last week had failed to produce a solution to the crisis was reinforced when Italy was forced to pay an eye-watering 6.47 percent on 5-year bonds on Wednesday, a record borrowing cost for the euro era.

Japan's Nikkei fell 1.3 percent and MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) was down 1.8 percent, following losses of around 1 percent on Wall Street and a steeper sell-off in Europe. (.T) (.N) (.EU) (.L)

The MSCI Asia ex-Japan is down 20 percent for 2011 -- the rule-of-thumb definition of a bear market -- while the Nikkei has lost about 17.5 percent. Both have underperformed global equities (.MIWD00000PUS), which have lost around 12.5 percent, and U.S. stocks (.SPX), which are only down around 3.5 percent.

Europe remains investors' biggest worry, with markets still braced for ratings agency downgrades of euro zone sovereigns.

"Markets are frustrated and disappointed, waiting for a road map on the resolution of the two-year-old debt crisis," said Ong Yi Ling, an investment analyst at Phillip Futures in Singapore. "Risk assets are all down. The debt crisis will be with us at least through the first half of 2012."

Equity losses in Hong Kong (.HSI) and Shanghai (.SSEC) deepened after the release of HSBC's China flash PMI, the latest piece of data to show the world's second largest economy losing steam, but reaction in broader markets was muted.

    COMMODITY SLIDE

Wednesday's stock market declines were dwarfed by carnage in commodity markets, where oil, gold and copper shed 4-5 percent.

Gold has been hammered in recent days as fund managers liquidate their holdings, either to cover losses elsewhere or to lock in profits on an asset that is still up more than 10 percent for the year.

"Some macro hedge funds are liquidating gold holdings and taking profits in a difficult year," said James Steel, chief technical analyst at HSBC.

The precious metal edged down a little further on Thursday to around $1,572 an ounce, while U.S. crude oil inched up to $95.20 a barrel and Brent crude bounced more than 50 cents to around $105.60.

The euro fell as low as $1.2944, its weakest level since January 11, and was later steady around $1.2990.

A downgrade by ratings agency Fitch of five major European financial groups, including France's Credit Agricole to A-plus from AA-negative, added to the already euro-negative sentiment.

This comes on top of the prospect of further cuts by rival Standard & Poor's, which warned earlier this month it could downgrade the ratings of 15 of the 17 euro zone members.

"I can see the U.S. dollar keep trending higher while the euro flounders," said Joseph Capurso, a strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Highlights: Russian PM Putin holds call-in show (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin made the following remarks during a televised program in which he answered questions from Russians nationwide.

    ON ELECTIONS AND PROTESTS:

"From my point of view, the result of the (December 4) election undoubtedly reflects public opinion in the country."

"As for the fact that the ruling force, United Russia, lost certain positions, there is also nothing unusual about this. Listen, we have gone through a very difficult period of crisis, and look at what is happening in other countries."

"It's clear that this negatively affected people to a certain degree, and the standard of living decreased, some lost their jobs."

"And so it is significantly easier for the opposition to recruit people who are dissatisfied into their ranks than it was before. ... But United Russia after all retained its leading position, and that's a very good result."

"The fact that people are expressing their views about what is going on in he country in the economic, social and political spheres is absolutely normal as long as everyone acts within the framework of the law. I hope it will be this way."

"I am proposing and asking for the installation of web cameras at all the polling stations in the country."

    ON ALLOWING MORE OPPOSITION PARTIES

"Well, we will register them, probably -- we'll see. We will have to change the legislation somehow. I repeat: We can liberalize things, we can move in this direction."

    ON THE ECONOMY:

"We have many unresolved issues, but nevertheless some remarkable and meaningful things have been done in recent years."

"Over 10 years we have cut the number of people who live below the poverty line twofold. Today it is 12.5 percent ... now this parameter is even more modest that in European countries."

Putin said that average wages in Russia had risen sharply during his rule, outpacing the rate of inflation.

"We went through the crisis years of 2009 and 2010 much more softly than other countries."

Putin forecast that the economy would grow by 4.2-4.5 percent this year, and that inflation would fall to just over 6 percent.

"Inflation is at a record low -- a level we have never seen in Russian history."

Putin said that the Russian state pensions system needed to be strengthened by reducing the rate of early retirement, but not by raising the statutory retirement age.

    ON FORMER FINANCE MINISTER KUDRIN:

"Alexei Leonidovich Kudrin never left my team. We are old comrades. He's my friend."

"He has not gone far ... I understand his position on many issues ... He did a lot for the country. I'm proud that this man worked in my government."

Putin said he had met Kudrin on Tuesday to discuss the economic situation and outlook.

"It's true that we don't agree on everything, but our differences are not cardinal."

"Such people were needed and will be needed in past and future governments."

    ON PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL MIKAIL PROKHOROV:

"Mikhail Dmitrievich is a consistent person, he doesn't give up. I understand he has decided to use a new platform to promote the ideas he considers right for our country."

"I can't say I wish him success, because I am also going to run. But I think he will be a worthy -- a strong competitor."

    ON GOVERNMENT MINISTERS

"They, as well as governors, are always at the forefront of criticism and of problems, and it is easy to make any of them a scapegoat. Something may be disputed, something may be criticized, but the worst we could do is turn to ministerial merry-go-round. We've had that in our history already."

"As for rotation, we have talked about it, the time will come. And of course, without any doubt, the future government needs an update."

    ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS

"Some want to shift Russia off to the side somewhere so that it does not interfere with them ruling the globe.

"They still are afraid of our nuclear potential. ... We have our own opinion, we conduct independent foreign policy and I hope will continue to do so in the future. This, of course, can be a hurdle for someone.

"But the West is not monolithic, and we have more friends than foes."

    ON LIBYA AND JOHN MCCAIN

"Mr. McCain ... fought in Vietnam. I think he has enough blood of peaceful civilians blood on his hands. ... Maybe he can't live without horrible, disgusting scenes of Gaddafi massacre when it was shown on all TV screens around the world how he was being killed.

"Is that democracy? Who did that? Pilotless drones, including American ones. They struck his convoy. And then by radio via special forces that should not have been there anyway, brought in so-called oppositionists and fighters and destroyed him without trial or investigation."

"Mr. McCain ... was taken prisoner in Vietnam and was not just in jail, they put him in a pit and he sat there for several years. Anyone would go nuts."

    ON ELECTING REGIONAL GOVERNORS

"We could think about ... all parties in regional parliaments ... proposing candidates for governors, regional leaders. These proposals would be filtered by the president and he would propose these candidates ... for election by the entire population of the region. This step seems to me absolutely possible and well founded."

    ON TERRORISM:

"The most necessary thing has been done. Separatism and terrorism have bee suppressed. Look at what is happening in the Caucasus, how people suffer from these phenomena.

"As soon as you let things go a little bit, many people will appreciate 'the difficulties of today', when they will have to face bullets to fight terrorism rather than demonstrating in the squares."

    ON THE NORTH CAUCASUS:

"The most important thing to do is to create jobs in the Caucasus itself. Not so long ago people were saying (Chechnya's capital) Grozny couldn't be restored; it looked like Stalingrad after the war. There are many questions for (Chechnya's leader Ramzan) Kadyrov, but Kadyrov is restoring Chechnya, and has restored Grozny like no one else has managed to."

"I am certain that corruption in Chechnya is minimal, but we need to develop enterprise, the economy, the social sphere in the Caucasus so that people would not want to leave, so they could realize their potential in their native regions. And to do that, certainly, if we want to maintain the unity of our state, we have to invest money there."

FCC to set standards for mass disruptions of Americans ...

    By Stephen C. Webster
    Monday, December 5, 2011

    ?

Following an investigation into a public transit authority that cut off mobile phone service amid a protest earlier this year, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said recently that it would attempt to outline the circumstances under which officials may legally disrupt wireless communications in the U.S.

In a release last week?(PDF), FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski noted that his staff had been investigating the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) authority?s preemptive disconnection of mobile phone towers in their subway system: an action that stymied a demonstration which aimed to shut down one of the train platforms as a protest of police brutality.

A similar tactic was attempted by Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak ahead of an angry revolutionary tide that toppled his government early this year. The order to cut off the entire country?s access to the Internet and mobile networks ? which was carried out by Mubarak?s corporate partners in the West ? was ultimately a tipping point that drove even more people into the streets.

Facing a media backlash against the disruption of cellular service in August, BART spokesman Linton Johnson blamed protesters for creating an unsafe situation. He argued that BART administrators committed to the action, which was not outlined by policy, in order to preserve public safety.

The FCC?s guidance was issued just before BART took a vote on a new policy?(PDF) that approves disconnections, but?limits interruptions to ?extraordinary circumstances? like the threat of a bomb with a cellular detonator, or if officials have evidence of ?imminent? criminal activity.

The new policy also specifically recognizes that ?any interruption of cellular service poses serious risks to public safety and that available open communications networks are critical to our economy and democracy.?

Praising that last line, Genachowski insisted that the FCC is ?committed to ensuring that communications technologies are harnessed to protect the public, and that first responders and other public safety officers have the tools they need for their important work.?

?For interruption 0f communications service to be permissible or advisable, it must clear a high substantive and procedural bar,? he wrote.

That bar has not yet been set ? but according to Genachowski, it will be, and soon.

?The legal and policy issues raised by the type of wireless service interruption at issue here are significant and complex,? he concluded. ?I have asked Commission staff to review these critical issues and consider the constraints that the Communications Act, First Amendment, and other laws and policies place upon potential service interruptions. We will soon announce an open, public process to provide guidance on these issues.?

A schedule for the FCC?s public input process on potential communications disruptions has not yet been set.

Verizon to take on Netflix with Web

Verizon Communications plans to launch a standalone service allowing customers to stream movies and television shows over the Web, in a fresh challenge to Netflix and the traditional cable TV business, according to several people briefed on the plan.

The phone company is talking with prospective programming partners about the service, which would be introduced outside of markets where it currently offers its broadband and TV package, known as FiOS, these people said. That would make it available to some 85 million U.S. households.

The new service could be rolled out in 2012, according to one of the people.

The package of programming would be limited in its scope, said two people with knowledge of the plans. Another person said the focus would be packages of movies similar to Liberty Media's Starz Play and Viacom's Epix or could involve children's programming from a partner such as Walt Disney Co or Viacom.

People familiar with the plans declined to be identified as the discussions between Verizon and programming partners are confidential and sensitive.

Verizon has been back and forth with programmers over the last two years exploring the possibility. While a lot of the discussion has been around fees, the programmers have also been concerned about the possibility of hurting their existing ? and lucrative ? relationships with the cable operators.

Crucially, any new Web TV service would be offered outside of Verizon's FiOS current markets. Verizon currently has 5 million FiOS TV subscribers.

A Verizon spokesman declined to comment.

News of the service will have added controversy in the wake of sister company Verizon Wireless's plans to resell cable TV service for Comcast Corp, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks.

Under that deal, announced last week, Verizon Wireless will pay $3.6 billion for valuable spectrum from the cable companies. Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon and Vodafone Group.

While a limited package of TV shows and movies is unlikely to have an immediate impact on cable sales, the launch of an online video service by a major company like Verizon will only add to the uneasiness in the pay TV business.

Companies that sell cable and satellite subscriptions are concerned that customers will drop their pay-TV subscriptions in favor of cheaper Web alternatives ? so called 'cord-cutting' or 'over-the-top'.

Most likely, Verizon would want to price any such service competitively with Netflix whose subscriber count has swelled to some 23 million.

In the last few years, traditional cable operators have been steadily losing video customers to satellite and phone companies who have replicated the cable model. But the biggest fear is that new Web rivals including Netflix, Amazon.com Inc and Google Inc will disrupt the $100 billion a year cable business.

Microsoft Corp had looked closely at launching a similar disruptive service through its XBox gaming device but has so far decided to work with the cable industry in offering an enhanced service to paying cable and satellite subscribers.

One reason Verizon is keen on launching online services is to be able to grow its customer base and thereby lower its programming costs on a per subscriber basis. The more subscribers a distributor has the easier it is to negotiate lower fees.

Programmers and distributors have been working closely together for the last year on making cable networks available on the Web to paying subscribers in an initiative called TV Everywhere.

Verizon FiOS customers currently have access to around 30 networks over the Web through FiOS TV Online.

(AP) ? The Material Girl will be taking the stage on football's biggest night.

Madonna, who has sold more than 300 million records, will perform at halftime of the Super Bowl in Indianapolis. The NFL and NBC announced Sunday during the Detroit-New Orleans game that the Grammy Award-winning singer will highlight the show at Lucas Oil Stadium on Feb. 5.

The show is the most-watched musical event of the year, with more than 162 million in the U.S. tuning in to see The Black Eyed Peas' performance with Slash and Usher in Dallas at halftime of Green Bay's Super Bowl win over Pittsburgh last February.

Madonna, a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, will join such acts as Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Prince, U2, Paul McCartney, The Who and the Rolling Stones to perform during recent Super Bowls. She will collaborate with a team from Cirque du Soleil, choreographer Jamie King, and artists from Moment Factory.

Madonna, currently in the studio working on a new album, has a new film "W.E." which she directed, wrote and produced and will open nationally two days before the NFL's signature event.

The Super Bowl and halftime show, sponsored by Bridgestone Americas, will be broadcast worldwide on NBC.

A glimmer of good news for Obama in jobs report

(AP) ? Finally, a flicker of economic hope for President Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats, even if it's a faint one.

November's sharp drop in the unemployment rate shows that jobs are finally moving in the right direction and suggests the economy is on firmer footing as the country heads into a presidential election year.

The Labor Department reported the jobless rate fell to 8.6 percent in November from 9 percent the month before, a 2? year low.

That's still high unemployment by historical standards. And lots of problems still lurk ? from Europe's debt crisis to congressional gridlock to the tens of millions of Americans still out of work or otherwise feeling economic distress. Furthermore, part of the improvement came because 300,000 people stopped their job searches and were no longer counted as unemployed.

But Friday's report, combined with other recent economic data showing advances in manufacturing and consumer spending, could give Obama momentum for the re-election campaign.

The White House and congressional Democrats were quiet in showing any enthusiasm they might have felt, instead using the new figures to step up criticism of anti-tax Republicans for blocking measures they said could help create even more jobs. Those include an extension of an expiring Social Security payroll tax cut that largely benefits the middle class.

"The unemployment rate went down," Obama said. "And despite some strong headwinds this year, the American economy has now created in the private sector jobs for the past 21 months in a row. That's nearly 3 million new jobs in all, and more than half a million over the last four months."

Said House Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson of Connecticut: "Today's unemployment numbers, while encouraging, simply underscore the urgency for Congress to address the top issue facing American families? jobs."

Republicans were publicly unimpressed with the jobs report, insisting Obama hadn't done enough and emphasizing that the jobless rate was still higher than when he took office in January 2009, when it stood at 7.7 percent.

"Any job creation is welcome news, but the jobless rate in this country is still unacceptable. Today marks the 34th consecutive month of unemployment above 8 percent," said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

That view was echoed on the campaign trail.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, in a Fox News interview, acknowledged that the report was good news but said it wouldn't help Obama politically. "This is the slowest recovery we've seen since (President Herbert) Hoover," Romney said. "He's going to have a hard time putting perfume on this pig." Hoover held office from 1929 to early 1933, at the outset of the Great Depression.

Despite stimulus measures by the Obama administration, Congress and the Federal Reserve, unemployment has remained high, peaking at 10.1 percent in October 2009 and staying around 9 percent for most of 2011.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, another Republican seeking Obama's job, noted that a major part of the sharp drop in the unemployment rate was "not because entrepreneurs were creating new jobs" but because some 300,000 Americans "have simply given up looking for work."

"The Obama model of class warfare, government takeovers in the economy and creating fear and uncertainty for job-creators have failed," Gingrich asserted.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., made a similar point about discouraged jobless workers and said, "My heart breaks as we approach the holidays for American families who have been abandoned by this president so that he can implement his radical agenda."

The president didn't try to take credit for the lower figures.

Asked about Obama's measured response, White House press secretary Jay Carney said: "We don't make much out of one month's numbers. We look for trends, and we know we have an enormous amount of work to do. 8.6 percent unemployment is way too high."

Still, "there's a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel" for gloomy Democrats, said Ross Baker, a political scientist at Rutgers University. "It's good news, but it's the kind of thing you have to rejoice about quietly. You don't want to hear the champagne corks popping. There's still so many people unemployed."

But Baker said that if Obama can demonstrate a "reasonable decline over time" in the jobless rate, people might give him the benefit of the doubt. "It doesn't have to get to historical lows to convince people that you're on the right track."

No president since Franklin D. Roosevelt has been re-elected with a jobless rate higher than 8 percent. Roosevelt won re-election in 1936 with a rate of 16.6 percent, and again in 1940 with a rate of 14.6 percent ? but joblessness was on the way down from a peak of around 25 percent.

The jobless rate peaked at 10.6 percent during the brutal 16-month 1981-82 recession while Ronald Reagan was president. But on Election Day 1984 it had fallen to 7.2 percent.

Obama used a joint appearance with former President Bill Clinton on Friday to renew his call to a fractured Congress to extend and expand the cut in the payroll tax that finances Social Security and Medicare. The tax cut, due to expire at the end of the year, affects more than 160 million Americans.

Republicans favor extending the tax cut, but have blocked Democratic attempts to do so by paying for it with a new tax on households with more than $1 million in annual taxable income.

With polls showing most Americans favor higher taxes on the wealthy to help bring down soaring budget deficits, Obama and congressional Democrats are portraying Republicans as defenders of the wealthy at the expense of the middle class ? a political theme they're sure to carry into the election year.

The jobs report comes during a week that saw solid stock market gains, including a near-500-point Dow Jones industrials rise on Wednesday, all potential good news for Obama.

"Let's say the stock market goes up another 500 or 600 points, and unemployment goes down below 8 percent by Election Day. That could allow for a big Obama surge," said Thomas Cronin, a presidential historian at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo.

But that "if" is a big one.

The prospects of significantly bringing down the jobless rate to pre-recession levels anytime soon "remain slim," suggests University of Maryland business economist Peter Morici. "The economy must add 13.1 million jobs over the next three years_364,000 each month_to bring unemployment down to 6 percent."

Egypt Islamists tell rivals to accept vote result (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood called on its rivals to accept the will of the people on Saturday after a first-round vote set its party on course to take the most seats in the country's first freely elected parliament in six decades.

Preliminary results showed the Brotherhood's liberal rivals could be pushed into third place behind ultra-conservative Salafi Islamists, mirroring the trend in other Arab countries where political systems have opened up after popular uprisings.

The Brotherhood is Egypt's best-organized political group and popular among the poor for its long record of charity work. Banned but semi-tolerated under President Hosni Mubarak, who was toppled on February 11 by a street revolt, the Brotherhood now wants a role in shaping the country's future.

Rivals accused the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party of using handouts of cheap food and medicine to influence voters and of breaking election rules by lobbying outside voting stations.

The Brotherhood told critics to back off and respect the result.

"We call upon everyone, and all those who associate themselves with democracy, to respect the will of the people and accept their choice," it said in a statement after the first-round vote, which drew an official turnout of 62 percent.

"Those who weren't successful ... should work hard to serve people to win their support next time," the Brotherhood added.

The world is watching the election for pointers to the future in Egypt, the most populous Arab nation and one hitherto seen as a firm U.S. ally committed to preserving its peace treaty with Israel and fighting Islamist militancy.

The Brotherhood's political opponents say it seeks to impose sharia (Islamic law) on a country that also has a large Christian minority.

The movement insists it will pursue a moderate agenda if it wins power and do nothing to damage an economy reliant on millions of Western tourists.

    "DON'T GIVE UP"

Liberal parties lacking the Islamists' grassroots base were trying to avert a landslide in run-off votes set for Monday and in two further rounds of an election staggered over six weeks.

The Egyptian Bloc, an alliance of liberal groups, ran large advertisements in newspapers to appeal for more support.

"Don't soften your support for the civil, moderate current to achieve a balanced parliament that represents the Egyptian people, and do not give up your rights," the message read.

With the Brotherhood and its ultra-conservative Salafi rivals apparently set for a majority in the assembly, newspapers were debating if they would unite to form a dominant bloc.

Nader Bakkar, spokesman for the Salafi al-Nour Party, told al-Dustour daily that talk of forming a coalition with the Brotherhood was premature and the results of the second and third rounds would determine the possibilities.

"All the indications show that the Muslim Brotherhood does not want to inaugurate an alliance with Islamic forces, but rather to conclude a coalition with liberal and secularist forces during the coming parliament," Asem Abdel-Maged, spokesman for al-Gama'a al-Islamiya, a Salafi group not aligned closely with al-Nour, told al-Dustour.

Head of famed embroidery house Lesage dies at 82 (AP)

PARIS ? Francois Lesage, the heir of the legendary Maison Lesage embroidery atelier which has long been embellishing Paris couture houses' most fantastic creations, died Thursday, the house said. He was 82 years old.

In a statement, the house said Lesage died "after a long battle against his illness," without providing any details.

Founded by Lesage's father, Maison Lesage worked for creme de la creme of early 20th-century designers, including Vionnet and Elsa Schiaparelli.

As the number of embroidery ateliers in the French capital dwindled throughout the century, the house of Lesage became the go-to spot for designers looking for exceptional work. Under Lesage's leadership, the house acquired such prestigious clients as Dior, Givenchy, Balenciaga and Christian Lacroix.

Luxury supernova Chanel bought out the atelier in 2002, as part of its bid to ensure the survival of the "petites mains," or artisans ? from embroiders to flower- button- and hat-makers ? the City of Light's top fashion labels rely on.

"Francois Lesage was an immense lover of couture who established embroidery as a true art form and was internationally renowned," the statement quoted Bruno Pavolvsky, president of fashion at Chanel and president of the Maison Lesage, as saying. Both houses "are committed to perpetuating the exceptional know-how that he bequeathed to his embroiders and thus will pay the greatest homage to his talent as an artisan."

The transmission of the craft was a major preoccupation for Lesage himself, and he founded an embroidery school housed inside the atelier ? a mazelike warren of rooms stacked with feathers, sequins, beads and silk in Paris' scruffy 12th district.

About a dozen women work in the atelier ? with reinforcements ahead of Paris fashion week. Simple jobs, like adding flash to a plunging neckline, generally take around 20 hours of work. More complicated pieces, like the iconic trompe-l'oeil leopard skin gown made for Jean Paul Gaultier in 1998, require upward of 500.

Born on March 31, 1929 into a family of embroiders, Lesage once commented that he "never had any doubt as to what I was to do in life, given I was born into a pile of beads and sequins," according to the statement.

After taking over the embroidery studio as a young man, he became an icon of Paris' fashion scene. A debonaire gentleman impeccably turned out in dark suits, Lesage was a frequent front-row guest at the fashion houses for which he worked.

An accomplished equestrian, Lesage was made a chevalier, or knight, in France's prestigious Legion d'Honneur honor society.
