General Motors, Ford slip behind Japanese automakers

General Motors' June sales fell six percent, while Ford's dwindled by four percent. Honda and Toyota ? both Japanese companies ? saw sales skyrocket by 45 and 26 percent, respectively. What are American automakers doing wrong?

General Motors and?Ford?lost ground to Japanese automakers last month as their rivals made a strong comeback from last year's earthquake.

GM's July sales fell 6 percent from a year earlier, while?Ford's?slipped 4 percent. By contrast, Honda sales leaped 45 percent while Toyota posted a 26-percent gain. Chrysler also did well, notching its best July in five years.

Total U.S. auto sales are expected to rise 11 percent when the final numbers come in Wednesday, boosted by summer clearance deals and low-cost financing. The Japanese are seeing the biggest sales gains from a year earlier, when they couldn't supply enough models to U.S showrooms after production was hobbled by a March earthquake.

In the first half of 2012, sales of new cars and trucks ran at an annual pace of just over 14 million, the industry's best performance in five years. Buyers snapped up everything from small cars to pickups, making the industry a bright spot in the economy. The only setback came in May, when sales slowed to annual pace of 13.8 million as the stock market dropped.

In July, car shoppers had a lot of financial enticements, analysts say. There were good deals on last year's models, low- or no-interest financing and strong trade-in values due to high used-car prices. That helped buyers shrug off negatives such as stagnant hiring and the financial crisis in Europe.

Auto loans are available from banks for just over 3 percent, and car companies are offering zero-percent financing on many models.

The auto pricing website TrueCar.com estimates Volkswagen's incentive spending was up 38 percent last month. Volkswagen was offering zero percent financing for five years on all non-diesel 2012 models. Nissan's spending was also up 22 percent to $3,205, the highest level among the eight largest automakers. Nissan was offering up to $3,400 off the outgoing Altima sedan as the new version hits the market.

At?Ford, the Lincoln luxury brand and Fiesta subcompact dragged down sales in July. Lincoln sales dropped 11 percent, while the Fiesta was off 23 percent. Sales of the Escape small SUV fell 12 percent after the latest version was recalled for safety problems.

Ford's?best performer was the Fusion sedan, which saw sales climb 21 percent. The?Ford?Explorer SUV was up 14 percent.

At GM, the company blamed its sales drop on a planned decrease in sales to rental car companies. But GM's retail sales to individual buyers fell 3 percent. Only the Cadillac brand reported a sales increase, up almost 21 percent.

Sales of the Chevrolet Cruze compact fell 39 percent as Honda and Toyota had full supplies of small cars. The Cruze was the top-selling compact in the nation a year ago when Honda and Toyota supplies were short. But last month, Honda sold more than 25,000 Civics, beating the Cruze by more than 10,000.

Despite the sales decline and last weekend's ouster of GM's marketing chief, company executives said they don't expect to alter marketing or factory production.

"There is no change in direction," said Alan Batey, U.S. sales vice president and interim marketing head. "The team is focusing on executing."

Unlike?Ford?and GM, South Korea's Hyundai kept gains it made last year while Honda and Toyota couldn't make enough cars. Hyundai sales rose 4 percent in July.

The third big U.S. automaker, Chrysler, saw sales rise 13 percent ? led by strong demand for its Ram pickup and Chrysler 200 sedan. Chrysler's top seller, the Ram pickup, rose 17 percent in July as home building increased. And the company's highly-anticipated new car, the Dodge Dart, saw sales hit 800.

Sales of the Chrysler 200 jumped 43 percent. The 200, formerly called the Sebring, was revamped last year and got a huge boost after being featured in a 2011 Super Bowl ad with Detroit rapper Eminem and a tagline of "Imported from Detroit."

There are signs, though, that Chrysler won't be able to keep up the blistering growth pace from earlier in the year. The company's sales grew more than 30 percent in the first half, and were up more than 40 percent in January and February.

Nissan's sales increase was led by the Infiniti luxury brand, which was up 57 percent. Volkswagen had its best July since 1973, led by the new Passat midsize sedan.

Why do we need the next gen already? - InsertCointoBegin.com ...

? July 31, 2012Posted in: OP. ED.

PC gamers are always bragging about how they don?t have to wait for the next console to continue gaming on the next level. Console gamers are always counter arguing that the games for PC aren?t as good as they once were. Sure, PC gamers can update their systems sooner and play the next Sims or W.O.W. The argument has been and will continue to be an extremely debated item.

This would cease to happen should game development companies stop asking for more so often. We are in the longest generation of video game consoles to date and it has been going so well for everyone! However, this is not enough for the majority of gamers. I mean think about what we have accomplished in this generation. Consoles intagrating online, multiplayer game play CORRECTLY! Sure, we started touching on this in the last generation but it was far from perfect. Gaming systems have gone from all gaming to all multimedia. You can dance or run or even yoga it up in front of your console and you don?t need to hold a controller. This is still fairly new.

Now, Thanks to FIFA 13 if you have a kinect hooked up you can(and most likely will be) yellow or even red carded(if that?s how the rules work, not really a soccer guy) for inappropriate language during your game play. However, that allows you to change up your formation and call different plays. With Haunted(Xbox live game) you explore a haunted house and help restore the owner. Using nothing but your hands and feet you walk around the house using a flash light.

Now while being a nerd makes me excited to see where we are headed next with technology, I think its too soon. I think we are only scratching the surface with this gen. I already know that I am in the minority in this opinion but darn it, that?s my thoughts. What are yours? do you think we should move on already or is there still life left on these ones?

Rohingya Muslims "persecuted" after Myanmar crackdown: report

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Myanmar security forces killed, raped or carried out mass arrests of Rohingya Muslims after deadly sectarian riots in the northeast in June, a rights group said on Wednesday, adding the authorities had done little to prevent the initial unrest.

Aid workers were blocked and in some cases arrested, and Rohingyas bore the brunt of a government crackdown in Rakhine state after a week of arson and machete attack by both ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingyas, New York-based Human Rights Watch said in a report.

Based on 57 interviews with Rakhines and Rohingyas, the report seeks to shed light on a conflict that exposed deep-rooted communal animosity and put the spotlight on promises by the civilian government in office since 2011 to protect human rights after decades of brutal army rule.

"Burmese security forces failed to protect the Arakan (Rakhine) and Rohingya from each other and then unleashed a campaign of violence and mass round-ups against the Rohingya," said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch.

"The government claims it is committed to ending ethnic strife and abuse, but recent events in Arakan State demonstrate that state-sponsored persecution and discrimination persist."

Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin said on Monday the authorities had exercised "maximum restraint" in restoring law and order and that the rioting was not fuelled by religious persecution.

He rejected what he said were attempts to "politicize and internationalize the situation as a religious issue", adding that the government was eager to promote "racial harmony among different nationalities".

In veiled criticism of the United States and European Union, which praised the government for its handling of the unrest, Adams said the international community had been "blinded by a romantic narrative of sweeping change" in Myanmar.

The former Burma has a diverse ethnic and religious make-up, but the Rohingya Muslims are not included by the government. There are at least 800,000 Rohingyas in the country but they are not recognized as one of its ethnic groups.

Neighboring Bangladesh does not accept them and pushed boatloads back out to sea when they tried to flee the unrest.

"RESETTLE THEM"

Myanmar President Thein Sein said in June the government was only responsible for third-generation Rohingyas whose families had arrived before independence in 1948 and that it was impossible to accept those who had "illegally entered" Myanmar.

He recommended that the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR take care of them in camps or resettle them in third countries. UNHCR chief Antonio Guterres replied it could only resettle refugees that fled from one country to another.

The riots followed two brutal incidents in Rakhine state: the May 28 rape and murder of a Rakhine woman by three Rohingya males, who were sentenced to death, and the June 3 lynching in response of 10 non-Rohingya Muslims travelling on a bus.

Human Rights Watch said police and troops did not intervene to stop the mobs from beating the Muslims to death. During the riots that followed, it said some Rohingyas who tried to flee or put out fires at their homes were shot at by paramilitaries.

It called for the government to end abuses, grant full humanitarian access and invite in international monitors. Access to the area remains restricted.

Thein Sein is in a tight spot. Concessions towards the Rohingyas could prove unpopular among the general public, but perceived ill-treatment risks angering Western countries that have eased sanctions in response to human rights reforms.

Minister of Border Affairs Thein Htay says 858 people have been detained for involvement in the violence, including five UNHCR staff and a U.N. World Food Programme employee. It was unclear how many of the total were Rohingya or ethnic Rakhine.

The Foreign Ministry has said 77 people died and 109 were injured during the violence, and nearly 5,000 homes burnt down.

The charity was created to keep Joe?s memory alive and to help others in the same situation.? It saddened him to hear the children crying at night in the hospital when they were alone and scared, he would say, ?he wished he could help comfort the sick children.????The Joe Joe Bear Foundation was founded in 2009 and is a 501c3 non-profit that give children with life threatening illnesses teddy bears to give them comfort when they are scared and alone.

Tough question, The importance of a bear to a child, and the comfort it brings.? Many of our children will not see a cure in their lifetime, so we focus on their comfort now.? Putting a little smile on their face.
