Stepfather says alleged A&M shooter a ?time bomb?
Thomas "Tres" Caffall, the man who police say killed two people?including a Texas constable?in a shooting near the Texas A&M University campus on Monday was a "ticking time bomb," his stepfather says.
"He was crazy as hell," Richard Weaver, Caffall's stepfather, told KPRC-TV. "At one point, we were afraid that he was going to come up here and do something to his mother and me."
Caffall, 35, opened fire as the Brazos County constable, Brian Bachmann, was attempting to serve him an eviction notice, College Station police said. Officers responded to the off-campus house shortly after noon following reports of shots fired, and found the 41-year-old Bachmann on the ground.
Caffall was shot during what police described as a 30-minute "gun battle." Bachmann and Caffall were taken to College Station Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.

Chris Northcliff, a 43-year-old College Station resident, was also fatally wounded during the shooting. A 55-year-old woman who was shot underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition. Three police officers?including one who was shot in the leg?were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
"We are devastated for the families that this SOB killed," Weaver said. "He was a ticking time bomb."
Caffall's mother released a statement late Monday saying her son had "been ill."
"It breaks our hearts his illness led to this," the statement read. Weaver told KPRC that Caffall had not spoken to his mother in several months.
Though some studies suggest there is a link between mental illness and violence, "the vast majority of people with mental illness are not violent," the University of Washington said.
"The contribution of people with mental illnesses to overall rates of violence is small," an Institute of Medicine study concluded. "The magnitude of the relationship is greatly exaggerated in the minds of the general population."
That's due, in part, to high-profile mass killers like convicted Tucson, Ariz., shooter Jared Lee Loughner, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia following the shooting. And most television characters portrayed as having a mental illness engage in criminal or violent behavior, feeding the public's perception.
But according to Scientific American, severely mentally ill people account for just 3 to 5 percent of violent crimes.
Monday's shooting in College Station came a little more than a week after seven people, including the suspected gunman, were killed in a mass shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., and less than a month after a gunman opened fire at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater during a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 and wounding 58.
Last week, lawyers for James Holmes, the suspected shooter in Aurora, told a judge the 24-year-old is "mentally ill" and that they need more time to assess the nature of his illness.

Unfortunately, her chatter did nothing to disturb the snoring of the enormous man who occupied the aisle seat.
Adding insult to injury, your flight was a connection, and a tight one at that. Since you were stuck in economy class ? no food for you! You watched in envy as the business class travelers enjoyed their pre-flight drinks, and their inflight snacks.
When you finally arrived at your destination, the cramping in your legs told you that you were suffering classic symptoms of Economy Class Syndrome. ?Never again!? you may have said to yourself. ?Next time I travel internationally, I?m traveling business class!? Then you looked at the prices, and you added Sticker Shock to your Economy Class Syndrome.
Fortunately, this dilemma has solutions. Using your frequent flyer miles is the easiest and cheapest way to get an upgrade. NB I?d like to point out that I was invited to a free evening before the opening of the restaurant and did not pay for my food and drink, however I have still written an independent review.
If you?re looking for reviews of Solita, there are plenty to choose from. Given their expert courting of the restaurant reviewing and food blogging communities of Manchester, they?ve managed to get the kind of press coverage typically reserved for a small-scale city-council scandal.
I must admit, I liked the place. The food was really good quality, the staff were friendly and despite the fact that the target dempographic came off a bit as being ?All things to all men?, there was a clear vibe to the place that said that great food was the first and foremost focus.
So everything you need to know about this menu has already been blogged. Hungry Hoss gave the place a fair and thorough menu review (though I?m fairly sure he?s been adopted as the unofficial mascot of Solita judging by the Twitter feed), Things To Do in Manchester confessed to a new-found Bacon Jam addiction thanks to the menu and Andrew Stevenson made no bones about the areas for improvements, as well as praising some of its ingenuity.
So what am I bringing to the metaphorical table then. Well, the place mats of course.
Allow me to explain. One of the points that stood out to me in this stylish red leather and black wood bar was that the place mats on the table were also the menus. Seemed at odds with the slick look, but it worked, but the thing that it was missing were some descriptions of the items. You don?t want to have to break out your smartphone at the table and pull up a blog to find out what the Pulled pork sundae or the salt cod balls are all about do you? Of course not! So I?ve made a new menu. This one gives you a bit of a heads up about the dishes. It?s a menu and a restaruant review, or for those of you who like a good portmanteau (two or more words bashed together to make one new word) its a ?Revmenu? of a ?Restremenu?. Just print out a copy and take it with you. You?re guarunteed to be considered a sophisticated, ?in the know? sort of diner.

US feds 'surprised' by NY case vs StanChart
US federal regulators were surprised by New York state's stunning charges that Standard Chartered Bank illegally laundered $250 billion for Iranian banks, The New York Times reported Wednesday.
The charges by the New York Department of Financial Services (DFS) Monday that the London-based bank hid the transactions, violating US sanctions on Tehran, were not endorsed by the US Justice Department, the Federal Reserve, and the US Treasury, the Times said.
While all were involved in investigating the bank's handling of US dollar transfers for state-owned Iranian banks over a 10-year period, they differed on the size of the wrongdoing.
And they were upset that DFS head Benjamin Lawsky went ahead with public accusations without them.
"Before Monday, these authorities were not expecting Mr. Lawsky to act," the Times said, citing people close to the case.
"In money laundering cases, authorities almost always move in concert. Lawsky's order against Standard Chartered irked many of the other regulators, who questioned whether he had moved too quickly."
Standard Chartered has strongly rejected the accusations of the DFS, which threatened to withdraw the bank's license to operate in New York, the hub of US banking, and could lead to huge fines.
The bank said it has been cooperating with all of the regulators, voluntarily approaching them over the matter and providing massive documentation of its activities.
It said in a statement Monday that only $14 million worth of transactions -- so-called U-turn deals which moved US dollars between clients through Standard Chartered's New York dollar clearing unit -- did not follow US rules.
Citing unnamed sources, the Times said that Treasury Department officials believe as well that many of the transactions, while questionable, "were not necessarily illegal."
Moreover, both the Justice Department and the Fed had still been reviewing the evidence and had not decided on whether to bring charges.
But the New York regulator said it had evidence that bank executives had schemed between 2001 and 2010 to mask massive amounts of the transfers from US regulators.
The DFS said it had evidence not only of illegal transfers for Iran but also for Libya, Myanmar and Sudan while those countries were under US sanctions as well.
The DFS branded the global finance giant a "rogue bank" that "left the US financial system vulnerable to terrorists, weapons dealers, drug kingpins and corrupt regimes."

China arrests nearly 2,000 in fake drug crackdown
BEIJING (AP) ? China's Ministry of Public Security says it has detained nearly 2,000 people in a nationwide crackdown on counterfeit drugs, including some to treat cancer.
It said in a statement on its website Sunday that it also seized about $180 million worth of fake medicine and false trademark logos.
The statement said the fake drugs were sold for the treatment of hypertension, diabetes, skin diseases and other "complicated illnesses," including cancer.
China has struggled in recent years to combat the production and sale of fake drugs. The director of China's food and drug agency was executed in 2007 for approving deadly fake medicine in exchange for cash.
The government has introduced more regulations in recent years to tighten safety in its drug and food industries.

Tarek Kabrit, Principal at Abraaj Capital and member of the VC Taskforce, comments: "Although small in size, innovative, high-growth companies are disproportionately important for economic growth. One Iowa business in top 100 for retail sales
An Iowa State University retail specialist says recent information on the industry shows discount store giant Walmart remained on top for retail sales at $316-billion, and only one Iowa-based store showed up in the top 100. Economist Ron Prescott says Walmart and other big box stores are hard to catch because of the sheer number of stores they have.
Prescott says overall the retail market is still making its way out of the recession. ?I guess we?re probably going to be right about four percent probably this year, we?re hoping for a little bit better than that, but it just seems like we?re on a slow climb in retail sales and everybody senses it. That?s certainly better than were we came from in 2008 and nine,? Prescott says.
He says it?s conservative growth that is going to take longer. Two home improvement chain stores are in the top 10 for retail sales for 2011, which might indicate that more people are fixing up their homes than buying something else. Prescott doesn?t think that?s the major driver in the category.
?You know the whole area of home repair and people trying to do things themselves, that?s been growing for number of years, I mean that?s why you have Menards, Home Depot and Lowes in the position that they are. I just think that?s going to continue,? Prescott says. ?I think during a recession you have a tendency to try and save some money and do a lot of the home repairs yourself. I you?re seeing some of that, but I don?t think that?s the major contributing factor.?
West Des Moines-based grocery chain Hy-Vee, had over seven billion dollars in sales for 2011. Prescott says Hy-Vee at 54, was the only Iowa company to show up in the top 100 retail stores. ?Seven billion in sales, that?s nothing to sneeze at and four-point-two percent in growth out of 251 stores, that?s still some pretty good statistics and something to be pretty proud of,? he says.
Overall, Prescott says the top company for new growth was the Sprouts Farmers Market, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona at nearly 72%. He says it?s part of one of the hottest trends. Prescott says there?s been a lot of discussion among economists on this natural, organic grocery store ending up the fasted growing retail store in the U.S.
He says a number of other such stores, such as Whole Foods, are also growing. ?That also points to the trend that this natural organic foods (movement) is actually getting some traction behind it and is really becoming formidable as far as the market is concerned.?
Whole Foods recently opened a store in central Iowa, and Prescott says from what he?s seen, these stores can become a challenge to the traditional food stores. ?A lot of people think the organic prices are outrageously high, but if you really look at them, that gap is narrowing and they are becoming more affordable, so people say ?why not? you know what?s the downside to this,? according to Prescott.
??And so I think you?re seeing people starting to change their diet. We have a lot of folks on medications, a lot of folks who are obese with type two diabetes in the United States, and they?re are looking at alternative ways to manage their health,? Prescott says.
He says fast food chains are even making changes in their menus to try and take advantage of the desire for people to eat healthier, but Prescott says the fast food companies can be limited in how much that can change their menu.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity began tweeting to avid followers years before it dramatically landed on the surface of Mars. But the number of its followers just skyrocketed.

China's Xu Lijia wins Laser sailing gold
China's Xu Lijia won the Olympic Games women's Laser sailing gold medal on Monday with Dutchwoman Marit Bouwmeester taking silver and Evi Van Acker of Belgium winning bronze.
Shanghai-based Xu, 25, added the Olympic title to the world crown she won in 2006.
Van Acker had been fourth in the overall standings ahead of Monday's last race in the series, but snatched bronze from Ireland's Annalise Murphy.
"I didn't have a very good start so tacked to the right - I know where my strengths are. I made the most of everything today," said Xu.
"I am proud of the gold, especially as I'm in Britain, because Britain and European countries are good and I want to take this experience back to China so more can experience the beauty of this sailing."

Two other advantages you may gain through refinancing are the elimination of personal mortgage insurance and the chance to get cash out at closing. If you have since built up some equity and your new loan to value is low enough to drop the mortgage insurance, your payment amount will be much lower. If you don?t own a home, or if you own and have no available equity, you can look at debt relief options ? including debt settlement and credit counseling. If your monthly payment is your number one concern, it?s worth a try to call your credit card companies and see if a payment plan at a reduced interest rate can be agreed upon. This will allow you to pay more toward your balances each month and eliminate your credit card debt sooner. While your creditors are under no obligation to change the terms of your agreement, they may very well be willing to do so, especially as it is to their advantage to receive payment, and negotiating a payment plan shows that you are taking the initiative to do just that.
If calling your creditors doesn?t work, or if you just want a quick fix, you can contact a debt settlement or credit counseling company. Debt settlement is a service for consumers who want out of debt at the lowest cost, in the shortest time frame, with the lowest payment? while avoiding bankruptcy. Credit counseling, on the other hand, is a solution that lowers your interest rates slightly and can get you a lower monthly payment.
The path to becoming debt free is as different as the ways you can get into debt in the first place. The first step toward eliminating your debt is educating yourself with all the options available to you. Once you?ve identified your needs, you can get started taking the right steps for yourself.

Current and former housemates of the Lamont Street Collective, a seven-room group house in Mt. Pleasant, share an interest in art and social activism.
Eric Sonnenberg, 34, has never really lived alone.
For the past 10 years, he?s has shared a five-bedroom group house in Mt. Vernon Square with friends and strangers.
Sonnenberg chose it over a studio apartment because of ?the social aspect,? he says. ?I was afraid I?d end up being a hermit in an apartment by myself.?
Sonnenberg isn?t alone in his desire for togetherness. Most cities have group houses ? typically large rowhouses where people share rent, utilities and living and dining areas ? but D.C. is famous for them.
Maybe it?s because of the throngs of young, unpaid interns who need cheap housing during their stint on the Hill. Maybe it?s because, according to real estate experts, the D.C. area has a serious housing shortage. Or maybe it?s because we ran out of things to be famous for. But group houses proliferate in the District, sheltering entry-levelers, artists and students alike.
Why do so many D.C.-area renters trade privacy and cleanliness for cheaper rent and a sense of community?
Like Sonnenberg, many are looking for a community.
?Probably for a lot of people it?s a good substitute for family,? says Lauren Konopacz, 25, another roommate at the Mt. Vernon Square house.
Many D.C. group houses have rich histories and personalities of their own, with cute or terrifying names such as Jam Jar, Rocket Ship, House of Payne or Thug Mansion. There are even nudist group houses advertised on Craigslist and a fabled ?polyamorous? house in Petworth, according to Daniela Aramayo. Aramayo lives at the Lamont Street Collective, a group house in Mt. Pleasant where housemates have shared a culture of art and social activism since 1975.
Of course, money is a factor, too. D.C. is expensive, and group houses are an affordable way to live here, says Debbie Kaplan, chief operating officer at Urban Igloo, an apartment finding service.
?You can live in a really nice place if you?re willing to share a place with lots of people,? Konopacz says of the trendy Mt. Vernon Square area where she lives.
A room in her five-person house ranges from $800 to $1,000 a month. That?s hundreds of dollars less than a studio in the area.
More Than Cheap Rent
Cheaper rent shouldn?t be your sole reason for shacking up with four or five housemates, veterans say.
People who thrive in group houses are those who embrace shared living ? from shared grocery bills and ?family dinners? to epic house parties, says Seth Campbell, 38, an artist, musician and dog walker who has lived at the Lamont Street Collective for 10 years.
Be prepared for the downsides: lack of privacy, roommate tensions, noise and the inevitable messes.
?You have to accept a certain amount of chaos,? Campbell says.
?We found a burrito in a closet one time,? says Jacob Moschler, who lived in the Mt. Vernon group house for six years. ?It had been there a while.?
Endangered Species?
Unfortunately, that $500 room in Columbia Heights is growing increasingly hard to come by.
?People are not buying in general right now, so there?s more renting going on, which makes them scarcer,? Kaplan says.
Rent prices are up all over the city, and group houses are no exception. Even in up-and-coming areas, rooms that once rented for $500 a month are approaching $700 to $900, according to Craigslist postings.
And some houses that had been rented out to groups for years are being sold off to single families.
?The collectively run group house is kind of an endangered species,? says Ken Srdjak, 26, of the Lamont Street Collective.
As the number of houses decreases, competition for the rooms in them heats up. The Mt. Vernon housemates receive 75 to 100 responses every time they advertise an open room on Craigslist.
?We end up having to ignore a lot of people who are perfectly nice,? Sonnenberg says.
But with new buildings coming on the market, the competition should lighten up. ?Come next year, it will probably be better for renters,? Kaplan says.
Renters hope D.C. never loses its group house culture.
As Lamont Street?s Hillary Lazar says, ?I can?t imagine living in D.C. and not being part of this community.?
